100th Day Rigor

I know many of us are having celebrations of the 100th day in the upcoming weeks. I wanted to share some ways we can add rigor to those activities.

Ethics: You can have your students turn to a partner and discuss or use these as writing prompts.

Is it right or wrong to spend $100 on something frivolous?
Do we treat 100 year old people right?
What would you do if you found a hundred dollar bill and didn't know who had dropped it? Would where you find it change your response-if you found it on the ground at someone's house? In front of a police station?

Multiple Perspectives:

Would you rather be the number 100 or 10?
What would be the benefits of being 100?
What will life be like in 100 years? What was it like living 100 years ago?

Rules:

What is always true about the number 100?
What is always true about school now since the 100th Day?

There are books you can use to compare and contrast your celebrations with those in the stories.

Adapt the 100th Day celebrations for different professions-what would the 100th day of being a scientist look like? a parent?

Write about what the 100th day of middle school will look like, high school, college?

I asked my students to simply write what they would buy for $100--I was not surprised at the results. They really don't have much concept of how much things are worth. Many wrote that they would buy a car, house, even a castle. So we did an activity on the Smartboard where the kids sorted the pictures into what costs $1, $10, $100.

Have fun celebrating with your students!!!!
